NEVER set up a welding ground in a way that facilitates weld current going through a clamping device for 2 reasons:

1. If there is any arcing it will affect the integrity of the device by creating hard spots in the metal structure (prone to cracking).
2. It’s always best to keep your current pathway non-ferrous (copper), which makes the weld zone the most resistant part of the current pathway.
